American-Ghanaian comedian Michael Blackson has voiced his concerns about the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) following his mother’s death, citing issues of misdiagnosis, inadequate care, and high treatment costs.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he labeled UGMC as “the worst hospital in Ghana,” claiming that medical staff frequently misdiagnosed his mother while recommending expensive treatments. He emphasized a lack of empathy among some staff, despite the hospital’s appealing exterior.
Blackson recounted an incident where his sister had a confrontation with a nurse, who later involved the police while the family was identifying their mother’s body. He also noted that while the hospital was quick to contact him about payments, he received no updates on his mother’s condition.
After spending approximately GH¢250,000 on treatment, he expressed frustration upon learning that his mother had contracted an infection leading to her death. He contemplated legal action but was doubtful about the effectiveness of the process in Ghana.
Concluding his thoughts, Blackson suggested that Ghanaians living abroad consider regular medical check-ups in Europe or the U.S. He called for hospitals like UGMC to prioritize patient care over financial interests for the benefit of all patients.
