The Ministry of Health has begun a three-day mid-year review of the government’s health sector commitments outlined in the NDC 2024 Manifesto, as authorities assess progress and identify areas requiring faster implementation.
The review, which started on August 15, 2026, in Ho, is bringing together heads of agencies, institutions and programmes under the Ministry of Health, led by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
The meeting is assessing progress towards government commitments aimed at improving access to quality, affordable and equitable healthcare across Ghana.
Key initiatives under review include the Free Primary Healthcare programme, Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCare), retooling of health facilities, expansion of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the introduction of specialised nursing programmes.
The Ministry is also reviewing progress on the construction of additional regional hospitals in the six newly created regions, the establishment of cataract centres in selected regions, the formalisation of nursing trainee allowances, recruitment of health professionals and the completion of abandoned health projects.
Heads of the various agencies and programmes are expected to present updates on achievements, implementation challenges and measures required to accelerate delivery.
The retreat also includes training in Public Financial Management, aimed at strengthening the efficient use of public resources and promoting good governance across the health sector.
Speaking at the opening of the review, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh highlighted progress recorded across the sector and commended agencies for their contributions.
He also directed Board Chairs and heads of health agencies to comply strictly with the Public Financial Management Act, stressing the importance of prudent and efficient management of public funds.
The Ministry said the review forms part of its broader efforts to ensure that government health commitments translate into measurable improvements in healthcare delivery.
It reaffirmed its commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by ensuring that healthcare services are accessible, affordable and responsive to the needs of Ghanaians.
