The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has shut down the Elmina SSNIT Hotel in the Central Region for failing to meet the minimum operational requirements prescribed under Legislative Instrument 2239.
The enforcement action was carried out on Friday, August 14, 2026, following an assessment of the facility by the tourism regulator.
A closure notice has been posted at the hotel’s main entrance, reception area and notice board, informing the public that the facility has been ordered to cease operations.
The notice states that the hotel was closed for failing to meet the minimum requirements provided under L.I. 2239.
Speaking at the hotel following the enforcement exercise, Central Regional Director of the GTA, Charles Buabeng, said the facility had failed to meet the required standards.
The GTA also indicated that the hotel has outstanding arrears dating back more than a year.
Mr Buabeng directed management of the Elmina SSNIT Hotel to suspend all operations and urged members of the public not to patronise the facility until it has met the necessary requirements.
He further warned hotel operators across the region to ensure that their facilities comply with the applicable regulations to avoid similar enforcement action.
Meanwhile, the GTA has also shut down two other hotels and a restaurant in the Cape Coast metropolis. The affected facilities are expected to remain closed until the requirements are fulfilled.
