The Government of Ghana has received the 11th batch of Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa following xenophobic attacks in the country.
The latest group, comprising 87 returnees, arrived at the Accra International Airport on Monday, August 17, 2026, as part of the second phase of the government-led evacuation exercise.
The returnees were received by the Coordinating Director, Political and Economic, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Harold Agyeman, alongside senior officials and staff of the ministry.
Ambassador Agyeman assured the returnees of the government’s continued support as they reintegrate into their communities. He encouraged them to draw on the skills and experiences they acquired in South Africa to rebuild their lives and contribute to Ghana’s development.
He also emphasised the importance of African unity, peaceful coexistence and solidarity, noting that despite the challenges experienced in South Africa, Ghanaians and South Africans remain part of the wider African family.
The ambassador also announced that modest support packages had been provided to the returnees to assist with their resettlement and reintegration. The exercise is being undertaken under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking on behalf of the evacuees, one of the returnees expressed appreciation to President Mahama and the government, particularly Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and officials of the ministry, for facilitating their safe return.
The group also thanked Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria and other stakeholders involved in the evacuation process.
Several institutions, including the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Immigration Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Red Cross and Port Health authorities, were present at the airport to assist the returnees and support their transition back into their communities.
With the arrival of the latest group, approximately 1,600 Ghanaians have now been evacuated from South Africa since May 2026.
The government expects about 300 additional Ghanaians to return in the coming weeks as the second phase of the evacuation exercise draws to a close.
