President John Dramani Mahama has donated a hearse to the Greater Accra Gonjaland Youth Association (GAGYA) to support dignified burials for members of the Gonja community.
The hearse was commissioned on Sunday at the GBC Clubhouse in Accra during a ceremony attended by traditional leaders, government representatives, religious leaders and members of the Gonja community.
Chairman of GAGYA, Issahaku John Polly Manful-Wura, expressed appreciation to President Mahama for fulfilling the association’s long-standing request.
He described the donation as a symbol of unity, compassion and support for the Gonja community and urged members of Gonjaland to put the interests of Kegbanye above partisan politics.
He called for continued unity among members of the community regardless of their political affiliations.
GAGYA Announces Youth and Women Empowerment Plans
Mr Manful-Wura also announced plans by GAGYA to support young people and women through various empowerment initiatives before the end of 2026.
The association plans to acquire 10 motorbikes for young people and provide financing to support women-owned businesses.
He said GAGYA would collaborate with institutions including the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Ghana EXIM Bank and the Youth Employment Agency to provide soft loans and Aboboyaa tricycles to selected beneficiaries.
Call for Unity and Youth Support
Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi, Hon. Alhaji Yusif Sulemana, also called for unity among members of the Gonja community.
He urged members to support initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and economic prospects of young people.
He disclosed that some young people whose names were submitted for employment opportunities had already secured jobs, while additional names were being processed.
On behalf of Members of Parliament from Gonjaland, Hon. Alhaji Yusif Sulemana presented GH¢10,000 to GAGYA to support its activities. He also presented two motorbikes to the association’s executives.
The programme also featured special awards recognising distinguished sons and daughters of Gonjaland in the Greater Accra Region.
The event ended with renewed calls for unity, youth empowerment and the preservation of Gonja culture.
