Former Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has denied allegations of wrongdoing in connection with the award of scholarships during the previous NPP administration.
In a statement issued through his lawyers on Thursday, August 13, 2026, Dr. Agyemang said he performed his duties as Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat with utmost diligence and therefore denied any wrongdoing.
His lawyers said allegations against their client by Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Ireland, Sabah Zita Benson, were intended to “renew public ridicule” against him.
The lawyers said investigations into allegations of corruption surrounding scholarship awards during Dr. Agyemang’s tenure had already been initiated by the appropriate state security and investigative agencies.
They criticised the High Commissioner for discussing the allegations publicly instead of allowing the relevant institutions to complete their investigations.
“The High Commissioner’s resort to the media to publicly berate our client rather than allowing the appropriate security and investigative bodies to discharge their mandate is regrettable and unwarranted,” the statement said.Lawyers Challenge Public Allegations
Dr. Agyemang’s lawyers further alleged that the latest comments were not the first time the High Commissioner had made what they described as “wild allegations” against their client while investigations remained pending.
“It is worthy of note that this is not the first time the High Commissioner is making such wild allegations notwithstanding the pendency of investigations by state security and investigative agencies,” they said.
The lawyers stressed that Dr. Agyemang had made himself available to the relevant security agencies and had fully cooperated with investigations to ensure the allegations were thoroughly examined.
They said their client remained committed to having the matter investigated to its conclusion and clearing his name.
The lawyers described Dr. Agyemang as a law-abiding citizen who remains focused on serving the people of Abuakwa South and committed to the rule of law and due process.
“Our client is a law-abiding citizen who remains focused on faithfully discharging the mandate entrusted to him by the good people of Abuakwa South and is firmly committed to the rule of law and due process,” the statement added.
The former Registrar, they said, remains confident that “in the fullness of time, the truth will prevail, and he will be vindicated.”
Dispute Over £3.1 Million Scholarships
The response follows comments by Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK and Ireland, Sabah Zita Benson, on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Wednesday, August 12.
She alleged that Dr. Agyemang, before leaving office, awarded UK scholarships to 189 students at a cost of approximately £3.1 million to £3.2 million and included them in the 2025/2026 academic year despite the NDC administration having assumed office in 2025.
“I was shocked because so far as I am concerned, this NDC government has not sent any student for 2025-2026 academic year. And 2025 was when NDC took office,” she said.
According to Ms Benson, she subsequently conducted investigations and found that the previous Registrar had approved scholarships for 189 students across various universities in the United Kingdom.
She further claimed that the amount had contributed to Ghana’s outstanding debt to various UK universities.
Dr. Agyemang, through his lawyers, has rejected the allegations and maintained that he is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigations.
