The Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Ghana, Prof. Rosina Kyerematen, has urged young people to combine their talents and ambitions with courage, continuous learning and perseverance if they want to achieve meaningful success.
Prof. Kyerematen said talent and aspirations on their own were insufficient, stressing that young people must be prepared to take action, build their knowledge and remain resilient when confronted with difficulties.
She made the remarks on Friday, August 14, 2026, at the annual Empower Vault Summit, held at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana.
The summit is a leadership and mentorship initiative aimed at equipping young people with practical skills, values and mindsets to help them succeed in their personal, professional and entrepreneurial lives.
The programme was organised by Horses and Stables in partnership with the Office of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Vice President.
Empower Vault Summit highlights courage and perseverance
Addressing participants, Prof. Kyerematen said young people possess different talents, abilities and ambitions that could provide a foundation for exceptional accomplishments when supported by purposeful action.
She said the critical distinction between people who simply have dreams and those who ultimately achieve them is their willingness to act, learn continuously and remain committed when challenges arise.
“Each of you possesses unique talents, abilities, and dreams. The difference between those who merely dream and those who achieve greatness is their courage to act, to learn continuously, and to persevere when challenges arise,” she said.
The Dean encouraged participants not to allow their personal backgrounds or current circumstances to determine the limits of their ambitions.
She emphasised that determination, resilience and consistent hard work could have a significant impact on the direction of their lives.
“Let this conference inspire you to believe that your background does not determine your destiny. And that with dedication, resilience, and hard work, you can achieve extraordinary things,” she added.
Young people encouraged to embrace continuous learning
Prof. Kyerematen also drew attention to the value of knowledge, skills and relationships developed through leadership and mentorship programmes.
She said the connections young people establish at such events could expose them to opportunities capable of influencing their career paths and increasing their contribution to society.
“The knowledge, skills, and relationships you build here can open doors to new opportunities and help shape your future careers and contributions to society,” she told participants.
The Dean urged young people to take responsibility for their own development by recognising their abilities and taking intentional steps towards their goals.
Self-belief is central to youth empowerment
According to Prof. Kyerematen, genuine empowerment begins with self-belief and must be reinforced through curiosity, courage and a willingness to learn.
She encouraged participants to set ambitious goals while remaining open to new ideas, challenges and opportunities.
“Remember that empowerment begins with believing in yourself, in your potential, and in taking deliberate steps towards your goals. Dream big, be curious, be courageous, and be willing to embrace new ideas, challenges, and opportunities,” she said.
Empower Vault Summit promotes youth leadership
The Empower Vault Summit is designed to give young people across Ghana greater clarity of purpose, stronger personal values and practical tools for leadership, entrepreneurship and personal development.
Through mentorship, networking and knowledge-sharing, the platform provides participants with access to different perspectives and experiences that can help them navigate their education, careers and entrepreneurial pursuits.
The summit also gives young people an opportunity to interact with professionals and leaders while developing the confidence and practical abilities needed to contribute positively to society.
Organisers believe that giving young people practical leadership and personal development skills will help prepare them to take on greater responsibilities and play a meaningful role in Ghana’s future.
The annual initiative forms part of efforts by Horses and Stables and the University of Ghana SRC Vice President’s Office to create opportunities that help young people develop the mindset, values and competencies needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive environment.
