Opoku-Agyemang: ‘My Job Is to Support the President’
Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed her commitment to supporting President John Dramani Mahama, saying the government’s focus is on nation-building and delivering on its promises to Ghanaians rather than creating disagreements within its leadership.
Speaking on the KSM Show on Friday, August 7, 2026, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the government had a clear strategy and shared objectives, leaving little room for fundamental disagreements between the President and Vice President.
“We have a strategy. So what is there to fundamentally disagree about? To begin with, the issue is we are building the nation,” she said.
The Vice President acknowledged the responsibilities and pressures associated with the presidency, noting that President Mahama was exposed to issues and challenges that others might not necessarily see.
“He will see more than we would see. He’ll face more pressures than we would. So you try to defer as much as you can,” she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said her confidence in the President was rooted in her understanding of his leadership and her belief that his decisions remained aligned with the objectives they had collectively agreed to pursue.
“You know that he’s not going to do anything away from the agreed objectives. You know him enough, you trust him enough, and he demonstrates that enough,” she said.
She explained that this trust had shaped her approach to working with the President, stressing that her primary responsibility was to support his leadership.
“So my job is to support him. He’s not going to ask you to go and jump into the sea or anything like that,” she said.
According to the Vice President, the government’s unity is anchored in its manifesto commitments and the mandate given to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by the Ghanaian electorate.
“What are we doing together? That’s a fundamental question. We are here because we have a manifesto. We did the campaign. The people of Ghana listened to us. They were very merciful to us,” she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang described her working relationship with President Mahama as positive, expressing gratitude for the level of cooperation between them.
“So far, so good. And I’m very, very thankful. I’m very, very thankful that we have such a good working relationship,” she said.
